2008-2009 Schedule:
Faith Matters (for Young Adults), Room A93 (West Wing)
Teacher: Mike Richardson, Sydney Sattler
Out of school? First or second adult job? Single? Married? Come join a group of young adults learning to balance the new stresses of “the real world” with being a person of faith.
Connecting Faith With Life, Room A102
Teachers: Ron Thomas, Jim Brown, Leslie Kunkel
We will explore ways to recognize and appreciate God’s presence in our every day lives at both work and play. We plan to examine how God’s presence influenced the great themes of the Bible and how He blessed the lives of both New and Old Testament characters. We will learn to recognize and lean against the world’s success—illusions from a book called Looking for Enough in a Culture of More. Along the way, we will listen to music, watch movies, laugh, cry and celebrate Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter together.
Perspectives, Room A95 (West Wing)
Teachers: Jerry Weber, Dan Miller
We are currently reading and discussing Leonard Sweet’s new book, “11.” Sweet takes a look at biblical figures and argues that faith is more than a journey. It is about who’s in your posse—who is traveling along the road with you? Sweet argues that each of us needs 11—and in the end 12—different types of friends to journey alongside of us. Come find out who you are in relationship with already and who you may be missing.
Later in the year we will explore some of the main theological themes of the Gospel of John and then Bart Ehrman’s book Peter, Paul, and Mary Magdalene: The Followers of Jesus in History and in Legend.
Bible Discovery, Room A103
Teacher: Dale Cross
We’ll begin the year exploring what is in this little New Testament book of James. Is the writer serious about all those practical instructions? Join us for this exploration. Then we’ll take on one of the Old Testament prophets and struggle with their message for us today.
Krazy Kinfolk , A91 (West Wing)
Teacher(s): Holli Tickle
Join us as we take a look at the families and other relationships in the Bible. We’ll begin with the book Flawed Families of the Bible, How God’s Grace Works Through Imperfect Relationships by David E. Garland and Diana R. Garland. Each chapter in this book will explore the stories of one of the families in the Bible, seeking to make connections to the experiences of families today.
A Cappella, Choir Room
Teacher(s): Robin Prater, Bob Peace
“A cappella” means singing without accompaniment, but it also means “in the church style.” Our aim is to enrich our faith through discussion with others. The class keys off the Choir schedule (we finish at 10:30), but is by no means limited exclusively to Choir members and is open to anyone with a desire to attend. Topics may range from baptism to current events to the message behind the music being sung that day. You don’t need music background--just the desire to interact with others.
New Members, Room A101 (Bride’s Room)
Teacher: Dave Fry
The New Member Class meets for two consecutive Sundays quarterly. People who are interested in joining PHPC will meet each other, so that they will begin to feel connected to folks here; consider how being part of a church affects their personal experiences of God; tour the facilities to learn where things are; and ask anything about being Presbyterian. Those who wish will be received into membership during worship on the second Sunday of the class.
Check with the church office for answers to any questions you may have.
